"...so, some were lucky, like me..."
Harland and I met in July of 2006 at the home of his younger brother. Over the course of several days, Harland shared his vivid memories of the Italian front and graciously answered my questions. Since then, he's shared  articles about the 1940's perspective on combat stress, the WWII memoirs of his friend Dr. Walter Marchand, and innumerable helpful bits of information. Rarely do weeks go by that I don't hear from him - an update on a friend wounded in Iraq, a political article, a report on military medicine. Look in the photo and you'll see his everpresent notebook!
Harland and Jean Hermann on their 60th wedding anniversary, Feb 2008. The Hermanns have three children and five grandchildren. Both remain active in community affairs.
